WANTED TO PURCHASE
Currently we are seeking to purchase loose copies of Country Life
Magazine prior to 1960, and bound volumes from any date (it was first
published in 1897, and weekly since). We are, of
course, happy to view and collect from anywhere in the
COUNTRY LIFE MAGAZINES We currently hold in stock
several thousand issues of this important English magazine. Whilst there are
notable articles on most aspects of country living, fashion, travel,
collecting, country pursuits etc, it is pre-eminent in two aspects; its
articles on country houses, and the extent and quality of its property
advertisements. In its text, since 1897 to the present day, it has published
scholarly articles, many in several parts, on country houses of the

Imperialist buildings in India (including much of New Delhi), Queen Mary's
dolls' house and Hampstead Garden Suburb. But his greatest heritage is the
traditional Edwardian country house, an architectural style he made his own,
using local materials and often working with Gertrude Jekyll who designed the
gardens for his family homes. A compelling new biography,

plans. It was Lutyens' early work before the
First World War, and the first appearance of this book in 1913 which
established Lutyens' name in domestic architecture of
a particularly British nature. He was a master in the use of space and in the
production of interesting angles and views. Arches gave glimpses, light is
graded for effect, windows are cunningly placed. No
detail was too small for this great architect's attention. Includes
a chapter on furniture designed by Lutyens, and an

1930. 8 3/4" x 5 5/8", 29 pages + 3 pages of advertisements, 8 full
page black and white photographs. A most interesting account
of the Crooked Spire of Chesterfield. This is a 14th. century spire built of timber and covered with lead; the
structure has 8 sides, and in the course of building started to lean. In order
to counteract the lean, a twist was introduced. The effect today is dramatic and
well illustrated here from different directions. Over the last 100 years
considerable restoration has taken place, and there are interesting interior
and exterior photographs showing the problems encountered. Soft covers; stapled
- the staples have rusted, and the inner sheet (pages 15-18) is detached from
