John. THE WALLACE COLLECTION. 1997. 11" x 7 7/8", 132 pages,

accumulated principally by successive Marquesses of Hertford, whose fabulous
riches enabled them to buy exactly as their discriminating tastes prompted. It
was bequeathed to the British nation by Lady Wallace in 1897, and opened to the
public as a national museum three years later. One priviso of the bequest is
that it should be 'kept together, unmixed with other objects of art'; this
provision has ensured that the remarkable character of one of the greatest
collections ever made by an English family has been preserved. As well as the
history of the collection, this volume presents works of art from the
Collection, ranging from arms and armour, magnificent furniture, French
eighteenth century art, and including magnificent examples of furniture and
